On Saturday, August 10th at 9PM, the play Future will be performed in the venue Between Churches. The text for the play is the result of the mutual effort of Žiga Divljak and Gregor Zorc, whilst the play is directed by Žiga Divljak. It is the collaborative production of the Belgrade Drama Theatre and the Municipal Theater of Ljubljana.
The inspiration behind the text for the play was the novel titled The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson.
At the media conference held so as to announce the premiere of the play Žiga Divljak ,one of the most promising young directors of the region, stated the following: “The ecological situation in the region is catastrophic, and it is of the utmost importance that we speak of this topic. We live in a world inhabited by many living beings, and when a species becomes extinct, we all suffer the consequences one way or another. Man considers the world his own nowadays, and perceives other living beings and nature only as a means to an end. This attitude is exactly what had put us in this impossible situation. The way of life that had existed for millions of years was incredibly endangered during the past couple of decades. If things are not fundamentally changed, a lot will disappear and be lost to us. The play future strives to capture the phenomena of man being preoccupied with his own problems, and therefore not understanding that he is not special nor different from other living beings he shares this world with.”
The play Future is chosen to be a part of the 58th Belgrade International Theatre Festival. Upon this selection, the following explanation was given: “The Slovenian director continues to explore the dystopian visions of the world specific of his authorial poetics in this project. This time ,however, the focus are unhuman experiences and not the anthropocentric perspective. This almost non-verbal play of striking aesthetics, tells the story of the birds’ encounter with waste that was left behind by humans. Divljak explores the influences of capitalism and consumerism on the natural world, creating a touching story that inspires us to question our attitudes towards nature at once.”
Along with Žiga Divljak ,who is the author of the text and the director, the authorial team encompasses: Gregor Zorc (playwright and the assistant director), Igor Vasiljev (scenographer), Tina Pavlović (costume design) and Blaž Gracar (music for the play).
