On Thursday, August 15th in the venue Between Churches at 9PM, the audience of the “Theatre City” festival will have a chance to witness the performance of the play Blood Wedding by Federico Garcìa Lorca. The play is directed by Igor Vuk Torbica and is the co-production of the “Theatre City” Budva and the Serbian National Theatre (Novi Sad).
The play Blood Wedding had its premiere at the XXXII “Theatre City” festival edition, and then continued its successful streak of performances on the various stages of the region. While having its premiere on the co-producer’s stage in 2018, it was also a part of its regular repertoire for the 2018-2019 festival season. The play was also performed at the 23rd “Without Translation” Festival (Užice, Serbia), where Milica Grujičić received the “Ardalion” award for the best female role in Blood Wedding. It was also a part of the “Mimosa Festival” (Herceg Novi) repertoire on the 50th anniversary of its establishment. Furthermore, after careful deliberation, the audience choose Blood Wedding as the best play at the Montenegro International Theatre Festival-The Montenegrin Royal Theatre “Zetski dom” (Cetinje). Additionally, one had a chance to witness the play being performed at: the 26th edition of the “Primorski poletni festival” (Kopar, Slovenia), the “Barski ljetopis” festival and the Mediterranean Theater Festival “Purgatorije”. The play was also made a part of the XXXIII “Theatre City” festival and the Montenegrin Theater Biennial, where Igor Vuk Torbica received an award for the best direction, Varja Ðukić for the best female role and Vladimir Pejković for the best composition. Igor Vuk Torbica was also awarded the “Theatre City” prize for his contribution in the domain of theatre creativity for the year 2017-2018. The authorial team also received an award of the Montenegrin Stage Design Biennial for 2022 and that for the play’s overall stage design.
During the premiere of the Blood Wedding, Torbica explained that when having chosen this text, his primary goal was for the audience to stray away from subjectivity. He wanted for them to let go of all that is conventional and just truly feel this play. He added that Lorca was his first choice, and that not only because of the undeniable leading position in the European and world poetic tradition, but because of him being one of the few authors to have been able to model his poetic expression for theatre use. Furthermore, he added that one could spot some important similarities between the Spanish poetry and linguistic heritage with that of our region. To conclude, Torbica said that Lorca managed to integrate like no other author before, making them equally present and powerful, the three ideological plans: the poetic, authorial and as it seemed ideological one in the form of the long-established artistic tradition, everyday language and personal perspectives.
Along with the director of the play Igor Vuk Torbica, the authorial team encompasses: Branko Hojnik (scenography), Jelisaveta Tatić Čuturilo (costume design), Vladimir Pejković (composer).
